Botryoidal Goethite (old)

Item Description

Very rich and sculptural large old-time specimen of highly lustrous and iridescent goethite stalactites and botryoids lining the vug covering banded goethite and limonite matrix. The piece is from the historic Salisbury goethite iron mine. This was the largest and most important mine in the Salisbury District. Discovered in 1732, with sporadic production until 1884, then worked heavily until 1904. It was the last goethite mine to close in the area in 1923 (MINDAT). Classic, old-time Ore Hill Mine material probably dating to the 1884 to 1904 heavy mining period, as the piece was handled by prominent USA dealer George English and was then in the Dustin-Ziegler Collection.
