Item Description

A dramatic, rich and important large gold specimen from the closed 813 Pit gold mine of the Olinghouse District. Nests of bright gold wires and leaves line numerous vugs in this most sculptural piece. Much of the gold has a gorgeous iridescent tarnish, suggesting that some of the gold may be electrum, a gold variety containing silver. The contrasting porphyritic host rock really adds character to this piece. This significant piece was collected in 2000 and was formerly in the collection of author and collector Scott Kleine. Scott wrote the article on this find for Rocks & Minerals, Vol. 79, No. 1, 2004, where this piece was illustrated on page 51. He also wrote on the District for the Minerals of Nevada book. Scott calls this Breccia Gold and is from the Zeolite Vein, 6030-Foot Level of the 813 Pit. A historically very important and rare large gold from the pit with a fine provenance. Valued at $5000-6000.
