Item Description

Calcite from the Sweetwater Mine in Missouri is one the most iconic minerals from the Tri-State area of the Midwestern United States. The beautiful form, color, crystal size and overall quality has made them popular with collectors for decades. This piece is a showy cabinet sized display specimen hosting a pair of sharp, lustrous, gemmy, soft yellow color scalenohedral crystals of Calcite associated with minor metallic grey Galena and iridescent Chalcopyrite on the back. The tips of the larger Calcite crystal have small cleaves, but the piece is otherwise in great condition. Very showy and three-dimensional, and much harder to find on the market now than they were 20+ years ago. Valued at $900 retail. From the collection of Colorado mining legend, Dave Bergman. Dave is now retired, but among other things, he was the foreman and primary person in charge of recovering specimens at the famous Sweet Home Mine near Alma, Colorado during the late 1970s. He is also the maternal grandfather of Brian Kosnar. See Dave's photo mining at the Sweet Home on page 58 of Peter Bancroft's book "Gem and Crystal Treasures".
