Item Description

There are many habits of Calcite found at St Andreasberg, but I can't say I've seen this particular habit / form. The crystals are highly modified, with alternation matte and vitreous faces. They are essentially white / colorless, and translucent when backlit. From this display side, the piece is in great shape overall, and displays beautifully. The label says that the specimen is associated with "Ganomatite" (or Gaensekoetigerz / Gaensekutigerz in German - roughly translated comes out to "Goose Dung Ore"), which used to be a valid species (an iron arsenate). I can see a tiny bit of what I believe is "Ganomatite" on the corner of the specimen, but it's hard to say for sure. What really matters here is the Calcite and the unique form and high quality of the crystals. If you collect worldwide Calcites or minerals of St Andreasberg, don't miss out on this one. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#5688). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
