Item Description

An unusual and alluring golden Calcite specimen from the area best known for producing the world famous "Herkimer Diamonds". This piece is distinctly different from any Calcite we've seen from the area as the strong golden color is richer than any other specimen we've encountered. Typically the Calcites from this area fall into the grey / white / colorless range of the spectrum, and to find a richly colorful piece like this is rare. The piece has a strange stepped growth along the tops of the crystals, which are partially included by pocket clay giving it a two-tone appearance. The base of the specimen is not complete, most likely where it separated from the rest of the surrounding Calcite in the pocket. It's quite gemmy when backlit, and it really stands out an a unique example of crystallized Calcite from Middleville. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#7813). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Velt" November-December 2017).
