Item Description
Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil is renowned for its engaging Calcite specimens. Irai is best-known for Calcites that are tapered and elongated, but there also attractive crystals such as those on this small cabinet piece. Ranging up to 9 mm, these satiny rhombs are gemmy and lustrous, and they are densely clustered in stalactitic, multi-direction arms. The reverse side is completely covered with green Celadonite. On close examination the two species are somewhat intergrown, so I can only assume the growth was surprisingly contemporaneous. The piece is in superb condition, and the fluorescence of the Calcites is an excellent, rich, pinkish-orange. A distinctive, aesthetic specimen that well-represents the locality. Previously in the extensive personal collection of Wendy & Frank Melanson, the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt, and W & A Cook. Really unusual specimen!
