Item Description

Striking, colorful, oxide-tinted, intergrown dogtooth calcite crystals, to 4.5 cm, are dramatically set in a quartz crystal-lined vug in basalt matrix on this excellent old-time specimen. The stepped growth of the lustrous, translucent crystals really adds pizzazz. RARE and showy combination material from volcanics in this most obscure area near famed Idar-Oberstein. It's hard to tell, that the back of the top large "tooth" is cleaved. Red calcite fluorescence. Previously in the Kessler Collection. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 1694 and acquired in July, 1960. It comes with a label from Anton Berger, a prominent Austrian dealer whose label dates from about 1929 to the 1950s. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). RARE and excellent calcite and quartz from this obscure locale.
