Item Description

A fine, rich and uncommon old-time calcite specimen from this locale, well-known for excellent skeletal quartz pieces. Sharp, frosted, translucent rhombs, to 2.5 cm on the diagonal, cover the showy plate and are colorfully accented with iron oxides. Pink fluorescence. From the Kalman Saxlehner Collection, well-known Hungarian collector, who passed away in about 1938. See his biography in the Mineralogical Record Biographical Archive: http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=1733. The old label undoubtedly dates to the 1800s. His collection was sold to Anton Berger in the 1930s. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 12093 and acquired from the Hamels in 1990 at Tucson. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record).
