Item Description

Calcite specimens of this large size and very high quality are RARE from the historic iron mines of Cleator Moor. Beautiful gem colorless modified scalenohedrons, to about 2.5 cm, with waxy luster are dramatically festooned on the sculptural undulating matrix. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 381. Kay purchaed this piece in the 1940s or early 1950s from Chuckawalla Slim, aka the "desert rat" and "the Rockologist", Edwin Vose, a very colorful character who sold minerals in California and Arizona from about 1925 to 1960. Read his biography in the Mineralogical Record Biographical Archive: http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=840. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). An exceptional, very rich and pristine large old-time Cleator Moor calcite with 360-degree viewability. Valued at $900.
