Item Description

A wonderful display quality specimen of the famous old Calcites from Alston Moor. This piece did not have a specific locality attached to it, but there are dozens of Calcite producing localities in Alston Moor, so it's hard to know for sure where it was found (though it could be from the Tynebottom Mine). This piece features many excellent, well-formed, lustrous / vitreous, colorless, prismatic scalenohedral crystals of Calcite measuring up to 5.6 cm long with minor attached matrix at the base. The Calcites are in excellent condition all around, with no major damage, only a bit of roughness on the underside where it was removed from the pocket wall. The piece is not only aesthetic, but superb quality as the crystals are gemmy and really attractive in person. The piece comes with several old labels, the two most significant are those from the collection of Ingo Loffler of Germany and a beautiful old hand-written label from Bryce Wright of London, England. This piece is almost certainly from the 1800s, as compared to similar pieces I've seen in older collections. Valued at $3,000 in the inventory.
