Item Description

A fine specimen of the famous "Raith" Calcites from Scotland featuring sharp, translucent, colorless, trigonal prismatic crystals The largest crystal measures 1.8 cm. These specimens date back to the 1800's, and even though this piece has a bit of damage, it's still in pretty good overall condition, and would be a highly desirable acquisition for any Calcite collector, or even a collector of classic minerals from UK localities. You just don't see these on the market, and I've personally only seen a few other pieces of this material in my life. Valued easily at $800 for size and obscurity. This piece dates to the collection of Sir Robert Ferguson (1769-1840). He was a member of Parliament and the landed nobility from Fife, Scotland (he had stopped collecting by 1810). This piece came to us in 1998 from a single drawer of pieces recovered in the Ferguson family estate, specimen #338.
