Calcite on Calcite

Item Description

A small cabinet specimen of a type of Calcite that came out long ago from Santa Eulalia Mine (1960s-70s) and have been difficult to find on the market even from a more recent find a couple of decades ago which this piece is from. These unusual Calcites were originally found almost 60 years ago in Santa Eulalia. These Calcites are instantly recognizable by their strange form consisting of an earlier generation of dark, opaque, hematite-included scalenohedral crystals seeming to emerge from within a later generation of translucent crystals of a translucent, rusty-orange color. They are very distinctive, most of them with one crystal having grown around and engulfed another, as in this case. The "inner" crystal was coated with dark hematite before the "outer" one encased it, which fortunately creates a wonderful contrast between the crystals. This colorful piece is in excellent condition! An interesting, really unique combination of calcite and hematite (or, perhaps, simply iron staining in some cases), that yields a beautiful specimen.
