Item Description

Mineral specimens are RARE from this old extinct kimberlite pipe diamond mine, opened before 1880 and closed in 1905. This is an EXTREMELY RARE large 2-sided combination specimen. Thick crusts of creamy pectolite, a Wollastonite Group species, covers both sides of the sculptural, tapered sandwich-looking specimen. Glassy calcite crowns both sides of the piece and the interior of the "sandwich" contains zeolites. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 1400 and acquired John Albanese in the late 1950s. Formerly in the Harvard University Collection and acquired during the Shaler Memorial Expedition to South Africa in 1921-22! Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). VERY RARE old-time South Africa material from Harvard.
