Item Description

A RARE specimen of crystallized Calcite from the San Jose Mine, near Wadley in San Luis Potosi. This locality is best known for its Stibiconite specimens, and I've never actually seen a piece of Calcite from this locality. The label questions if this piece is a pseudomorph after Stibnite (?), but I think it's actually a stalactitic formation as it's banded on the base and doesn't really show any notable previous crystal form. Instead, I think it grew in several banded generations finishing off with gemmy golden rhombic crystals on the exterior. If you collect worldwide Calcites or Mexican minerals, don't miss out on this VERY hard to find display specimen. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#2433). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
