Item Description

An unusual and very rarely seen specimen of Calcite from the Boltsburn Mine in Weardale which is best known for its attractive Fluorites. This piece is loaded with compressed, tabular, hexagon-shaped crystals of scalenohedral Calcite (showing two basal pinacoids with a very thin prism) measuring up to 1.1 cm across on matrix. The crystals show a bit of color zoning with a white/beige hue in the center and a silvery tone around the periphery. Good quality all around, with only a little damage. VERY HARD to find on the market, and it's certainly worth adding to a worldwide Calcite collection, or a suite of English minerals, especially from the lead mines of Weardale. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#805). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Velt" November-December 2017).
