Item Description

A hard to find specimen labeled as coming from Egnar, Colorado which is an unincorporated community in San Miguel County. Egnar got its name from the word "range" spelled backwards. With that said, there is no specific mine associated with this area, so it's hard to say specifically where this piece is from, though it could be from the Uravan District. This piece is a good representation of Carnotite featuring bright yellow micro material covering all sides of the underlying host rock matrix. The label accompanying the piece states that it belonged to Arthur Flagg (1892-1961), the namesake for the Flagg Mineral Foundation (http://flaggmineralfoundation.org/). For reference, Carnotite was named after Marie-Adolphe Carnot in 1899. Carnot was a professor at the School of Mines in Paris and later became the Dean of the school in the early 20th century.
