Item Description

Carrollite is known from several world localities in good crystals, but many people don't realize that the species was first discovered and named after Carroll County in Maryland of all places. There are only a few localities in Maryland for Carrollite, and this is one of the VERY few pieces from Mineral Hill that I have seen. For reference, the Mineral Hill mine dates back to the days of the American Revolution. The piece is from the collection of the noted and now deceased geologist, Allen Heyl (Aheylite), and according to his hand-written collection label, the piece was collected in 1941. Heyl later traded the piece to Rich Kosnar in the 1980s, and remained in his collection until recently. The specimen features micro/massive silvery Carrollite which is intermixed with dark black-green shcist on matrix. I have photographed the piece under the microscope, but it is truly a reference specimen. Still a very hard to find piece from one of the lesser recognized mineral producing states in the US.
