Item Description

Classic and excellent old cassiterite from the famous mines at at Horni Slavkov (Schlaggenwald) on the Czech side of the historic Erzgebirge. Sharp, highly lustrous, opaque to beautiful partially gemmy golden-yellow, twinned tetragonal cassiterite crystals are peppered on the matrix. The large crystal is 1.1 cm across. This fine old-timer has a super provenance. It was formerly in the collection of eminent German collector Carl Bosch (1874-1940) and was part of his 25,000 piece collection purchased by the Smithsonian in 1966. It comes with a hand-written Bosch label and a label from the Smithsonian. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 6877 and acquired in February, 1973. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). Classic old cassiterite from the Carl Bosch Collection (inventor of the Bosch process for agriculture). A fun historic rarity with great provenance.
