Item Description

Fine, old cassiterite specimens from the famous mines of Cornwall are a highly desirable classic and this is an outstanding example from the historic Dolcoath Mine. Absolutely splendent, blackish-brown prisms to 1.3 cm comprise this striking plate. These are very large crystals for the locale and large for Cornwall. Cassiterite specimens of this superb quality are very rare from Dolcoath. This ancient mine opened in the 1720s and finally closed in 1920! It was one of the largest copper and tin producers in the district. Ex the late Richard Kosnar Collection - and the label on the back has an 1860 date attribution (though we do not know the source, as this is not in Kosnar's own hand!
