Celestine on Sulfur (classic material)

Item Description

An excellent specimen of this old classic material from the Machów Mine, Poland, a giant sulfur mine that produced millions of tons of ore during its lifetime. This piece features a predominant doubly-terminated group of chalky white crystals of Celestine measuring 4.9 cm, sitting atop stark lemon yellow Sulfur crystals on matrix. The style of the Celestine crystals is notably thicker / blockier than most we've seen from this mine, as they are often thinner and more tapered. The piece is in fine condition, with no major damage I can find. A choice example of these specimens that date back many decades.
From the collection of Kurt Hefendehl (#3 Po), a well-known German collector all over Europe with worldwide contacts to dealers and collectors. He started collecting seriously at the age of 14 and his great and varied worldwide collection reached over 6000 pieces. He was very active mineralogically until shortly before his passing in 2020 at the age of 82. Considering his collection had a large number of pieces, it still had an unusually high standard of quality from most worldwide localities. He particularly specialized in all classics as well as minerals of the Black Forest, where he spent much time collecting. His Black Forest and German subcollections went to his good friend Wolfgang Wendel.
