Item Description

A superb and aesthetic celestine specimen from the Cretaceous-aged Glenrose Limestone of Lampasas County in the Texas Hill Country and on the north edge of the Llano Uplift. Celestine and calcite are the only two species known from the county (MINDAT). A fabulous, 6.6 x 4.5 x 0.7 cm, very glassy, lustrous, transparent to translucent tabular crystal "sail" with a striking jagged termination is dramatically set upright in the celestine crystal matrix. The sharp secondary terminated crystal is 5.7 cm long. This is simply an exceptional RARE 360-degree celestine from the county. Historically most celestine specimens from the county have been the blue blocky varietal, similar to famous Michigan celestines. Celestine specimens predominate from the county, BUT not of this quality. Texas is known as mostly a mineral wasteland, but this is a extraordinary exception from the Joe Lobell Collection, a well-known Oklahoma and Texas field collector. Valued by the former Texas dealer at $1500.
