Item Description

Chalcocite isn't necessarily a rare sulfide, but it's hard to find good crystallized specimens, and there are only a few localities around the world for really fine quality, well-crystallized Chalcocite. The problem is that most of those localities are fairly historic, and haven't produced any specimens in many decades. In the 1990s we started to see some truly unique and beautiful Chalcocites coming out of the Flambeau Mine in Wisconsin. Although the mine is finished, these pieces live on as some of the best Chalcocites to come from any locality in many years. This piece is a lovely miniature featuring many, excellent quality, sharp, well-formed, stacked / layered, pseudo-hexagonal (monoclinic) blades of Chalcocite with a classic patina or "sheen" on the surface (it's actually a small coating of Bornite) that has a bronze coloring to it. The piece is in good shape, but there are some contacts that you can see here and there. A lovely piece of this now hard to find material. From the worldwide collection of David Burgess (1951-2016). David was a prolific species collector from Newington, Connecticut, and the namesake for the extremely rare cobalt arsenate species Burgessite, which he discovered.
