Item Description

Childrenite is an uncommon, but fairly well-known phosphate found in low temperature hydrothermal ore veins. The species was named in 1823 after John Childrenite who was an English mineralogist, and was the curator of minerals at the British Museum of Natural History. This piece is from the type locality for Childrenite, the famous Tavistock District in Devon, England. The piece easily dates back over 100 years. This piece features a few classic, textbook, sharp, lustrous, gemmy, golden-orange color orthorhombic crystals of Childrenite measuring up to a few mm on matrix. Great quality and beautiful to view up close. We actually photographed this piece with a Canon MP-E 65 mm macro lens to better illustrate the quality. A great old time, historic specimen of this beloved material from Devon. The piece is from the personal collection (not inventory) of Herb Obodda.
