Item Description

Greenish-black Chamosite, the ferroan variety of the Chlorite Group, has pseudomorphed a large for the locale, sharp, moderately lustrous, textbook dodecahedral Almandine Garnet crystal. Scattered areas of remaining orange-red almandine are visible, as a bonus. The iron oxide coatings and embedded pearlescent muscovite add more character. This is a classic and excellent, old-time pseudomorph from one of the extinct iron mines of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan - the Michigamme Mine. Complete all-around and pristine. These "black diamonds" were frustrating waste products during the mining days, as they frequently damaged the rock-crushing equipment. Ex Al Kidwell Collection. Al was a well-known mineral collector and research geologist for Exxon. He passed away in 2008. The Phosphate Kidwellite is named for him. A classic, large, old-time pseudomorph with excellent form. This one is not magnetic, as few are - these are very rare in this size and quality, and seemingly unique to the locale!
