Corundum (var: Ruby) (fine crystal) on marble

When it comes to Ruby, most people are familiar with the amazing and celebrated gems that have endured throughout history. They have often been identified as a sign of wealth, perception and success. With that said, fine crystals of Ruby are actually quite scarce worldwide, and fine matrix specimens are even rarer on the marketplace. This piece is a fantastic matrix display specimen of Ruby, and I would like to add that not only is the crystal on this specimen very fine, but it's also UN-REPAIRED, which makes it even more desirable, as many of them are often glued back on the matrix. The Rubies from Jagdalak are among some of the most well-known and superbly crystallized examples of Ruby ever found, but are quite limited on the market. This specimen features a sharp, very well formed, rich pinkish-red color prismatic crystal measuring 1.6 cm long sitting beautifully on an off-white/light grey marble matrix. A few smaller crude Ruby crystals can be seen scattered on the piece. Under UV light, the piece shows good fluorescence. A fine Ruby specimen from a locality that is not producing nearly as many good pieces as it did 15-20 years ago. Valued at $1,600 in the inventory. For reference, if this piece were from Mogok, Myanmar, I can say with certainty that the value would be higher, though it's gemmy enough, that it might not have survived the mines and might have been faceted into a gemstone. It's important to keep this in mind when one is searching for a display quality matrix Ruby specimen.
