Item Description

A VERY RARE and showy combination of danburite, fluorite and tourmaline from, we believe, the famous and historic mines at Concepcion del Oro. All three species are EXTREMELY RARE from CdO. Pearlescent, translucent, creamy orthorhombic danburite crystals, 1.2 cm, with HIGHLY UNUSUAL pinacoidal terminations are aesthetically clustered atop the matrix. The matrix includes sections of purple fluorite and striking radial "suns" of tourmaline needles. We forwarded specimen photos to respected Mexico specialist, Dr. Peter Megaw, for his review. He has never seen Charcas danburites with pinacoidal terminations (always chisel-like), but he does have a Concepcion del Oro danburite in his collection with a similar morphology and creamy color. Fluorite and tourmaline can exist at either locality and there is a possibility that the needles could be Pyroxenes. An analysis would be needed for confirmation. Peter believes the specimen is from CdO, but there is a possibility it is from Charcas. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 2444 and acquired from Dawson's Minerals (label included) at the 1962 Hollywood Show. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017). A UNIQUE and very showy Mexico combination!!
