Item Description

Eichstaett is a town in the state of Bavaria, Germany and the limestone quarries in the area have produced some truly picturesque specimens of dendrites in host rock. This piece is a great example of the material featuring manganese dendrites (or possibly Psilomelane) sitting on Limestone to create what almost resembles organic imprints (a pseudo-fossil if you will). The dendrites have formed in Jurassic-aged limestone which are actually famous for dinosaur fossils, so it would make sense that people thought these particular dendrites were fossils of one form years ago. Specimens of this fine quality are rarely available Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#5913). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Velt" November-December 2017). A great German classic from this well-known deposit.
