Item Description

Dipyramidal ("beta") quartz is a high-temperature varietal with hexagonal symmetry, rather than typical trigonal form. It is VERY RARE from any of the numerous localities listed and illustrated by MINDAT for Carinthia, Austria. This rich and striking mounded, 3-dimensional small cabinet is covered with sharp, very glassy and lustrous, transparent to translucent, crystals, to 1.8 cm. Scattered crusts of goethite and one area of botryoidal goethite embedded in the side of the quartz crystal are colorful accents. It resembles quartz from the famous iron mines of Cumbria, England. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 5578 and acquired from the American Museum in 1968. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien-Welt" November-December 2017). RARE style Austrian quartz.
