Item Description

Emerald specimens are uncommon and are rarely on the market from this obscure South Africa emerald mine. This is a sharp, stout, good sized, textbook hexagonal, 360-degree crystal from the locale. The lustrous doubly terminated crystal has mottled green color and is partially translucent. The attached smaller crystals on the top, side and back with shale add sculptural character and color to this uncommon emerald. While these crystals certainly are not as gemmy as good Colombian ones, note that this is an old South Africa emerald specimen - far rarer. Ex Kay Robertson Collection # 4379 and acquired in the mid 1960s. Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record). Very rare on the market in this quality. 26 grams mass.
