Item Description

A gorgeous indicolite blue tourmaline, which runs through the middle of the cleavelandite matrix and out the bottom, stands 5 cm tall and contrasts dramatically as a gem tower rising from the white matrix. It has an incredibly good luster and a dramatic brightness internally, that is unusual, and like glass. The color is not strong or saturated, but it is somehow vibrant, and definitely colorful rather than "pale." It is a highly unusual color, quite unlike most other indicolite, because of the gemminess as well as the color. The top termination is a thin band of very dark blue, as well (so, technically, this is an Afghani bluecap). The piece is truly special in person - again, due to some combination of luster, brightness, clarity, and a subtle and unusual color. It is complete, without damage, 360 degrees. Donated by the Meieran family to the Rice Museum, and valued $5000-6500.
