Item Description
Elegant tourmaline on matrix specimens like this are not common at all, and this "starburst" cluster of tourmaline from Brazil is very colorful and different in style form the usual sort. A gorgeous, divergent, starburst spray of slender prismatic, gemmy polychrome tourmaline crystals is the centerpiece, and looks like an exotic tropical flower! All of the Elbaites display a 1 to 2 cm, pink-red body which is dramatically sheathed in a medium green exterior culminating and a completely medium green, pinacoid (flat) termination, for dramatic effect. The crystals in this spray are more translucent at the base grading to transparent in the middle and tips. They are up to 1.5 to 2.5 cm in length, and very lightly striated. The starburst spray is set off to one side of a a light colored matrix of feldspar, and intermixed purple Lepidolite for a bit of contrast. The majority of the crystals are terminated and those few that admittedly aren't are barely noticeable in context. The piece has no repairs. It is beautifully illustrated in Mineral Collections of Brazil, 2020, page 134, shown in the personal collection of the multigenerational Gioia family of collectors (from Sao Paolo). We bought this collection in 2018 but this piece was never offered for sale until now, as it was at the lab for cleaning and missed the previous offerings as we sold material, so this is a first viewing.
