Item Description

I think it's safe to say that the most famous Epidote locality in North America is the renowned Green Monster Mountain in Alaska. The Epidote crystals from this area are widely recognized as being superb examples of the species in terms of their size, quality and form. This attractive cabinet display specimen host several good quality very sharp, rather lustrous, dark green colored, prismatic crystals of Epidote measuring up to 4.1 cm aesthetically intergrown with white / colorless prismatic Quartz crystals to create a showy overall piece. The largest Epidote is actually doubly-terminated, which is rare in my experience with this material. The specimen displays beautifully on its own without a base or clay. While the piece is in good condition, there are some contacts, so it's not completely damage free. A good quality and eye-catching specimen of this famous classic material with great provenance. Valued $2,500.
From the collection of George Elling, a prominent East Coast collector. The significant pedigree of the piece includes being a former part of the collection of Frank Levy, Ed David, John Sinkankas as well as the Smithsonian Institution, by way of Washington Roebling (the number R7782 can be seen on the back of the piece to confirm that it was indeed from Roebling's collection). For reference, along with being one of the preeminent mineral collectors in the United States of his time, Roebling was a colonel in the US Army during the Civil War, and a civil engineer who supervised the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. He assembled a very impressive mineral collections (16,000 specimens), which was donated to the Smithsonian Institution after this death.
