Item Description

A superb old-time specimen of Erythrite from the type locality! This superb cabinet sized display piece features excellent, rich reddish-purple acicular crystals that have formed radiating "spray" associated with minor Quartz on host rock matrix. The largest single crystal of Erythrite measures 2.1 cm long. It's rare to find such rich and showy pieces - especially cabinet sized specimens - with notably good sized crystals for the locality. Keep in mind that this species was first described in 1832, so the original specimens are nearly 200 years old at this point. Valued $2,000-$2,500.
From the collection of George Elling, a prominent East Coast collector, with a label from Larry Conklin, and an historic label from the legendary mineral dealer, Hugh A. Ford. Since the label has Ford's New York address it dates the piece to at least 1946-1957, but could easily date to the 19th century. Please note that the Ford's label valued the piece at $25(!), a very significant sum for the time.
