Item Description
This is both an unusual and a colorful piece from the Aghbar cobalt-nickel mine in Morocco. This hefty piece is dominated by massive (or brudely crystallized), dull metallic gray Skutterudite ore that has dissolution vugs containing small clusters and tufts of vibrant, deep magenta Erythrite crystals to 2 mm. It is rare to find a good specimen from here showing the paragenesis (order of formation of minerals) of the primary cobalt-arsenic sulfide Skutterudite which has altered, creating space for hosting secondary minerals like these brightly colored Erythrite crystals that were in part made from the elements of the original skutterudite. This brawny piece has a mass of 788 grams! Old material.
