Euxenite-(Y) (rare locality)

Here we have a rarely seen example of Euxenite-(Y), a relatively hard to find rare earth oxide mineral, which was labeled as coming from the "Spruce Pine Mining District, Yancey County, North Carolina" but it's actually from the McKinney Mine in Spruce Pine, Mitchell County. This piece is a stout, euhedral, terminated, well-formed, prismatic crystal with graceful etching on all sides. It's actually undamaged, save the base where it was removed from the pocket wall. You don't see many like this with such good crystal form and no discernible damage. It should be noted that Euxenite-(Y) is typically a dark brown-black hue, and the outer tan color on the exterior of this piece is actually a surface alteration. An excellent specimen of a mineral that is rarely seen on the market, especially in this quality from this locality.
