Item Description

Classic Panasqueira material featuring sharp, well-formed, striated, jet-black, bladed crystals of Ferberite in a semi-layered formation associated with a predominant GEM quality Quartz crystal, plus many smaller Quartz crystals on the display side. Flipping the piece over you can see it is covered by a thin layer of what I believe to be either golden Muscovite or Siderite, along with a small amount of golden Marcasite / Pyrite. The piece is nearly a complete "floater", as there is only a small point of attachment on the base, but otherwise crystallized all around. No major damage that I can see with the naked eye. When it comes to crystallized Ferberite, Panasqueira was the source of some of the most impressive and attractive specimens extant. This is not a "black rock", but rather a fine crystallized example of a species that although is well-known, is rarely seen in fine quality examples like this from any world locality. Valued in the inventory at $600. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#13161). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
