Fire Opal in matrix (with "Contra Luz" color flash)

Some of the most well known Fire Opal in the world is from Mexico. These stones are among some of the biggest, brightest and most intense color Fire Opals from North America. There has been a surge in the price of fine quality Fire Opal from Mexico in the last few years, as the material seems to be more and more difficult to obtain, especially in such vivid stones like this one. This gem is a beautiful, good size stone with good "jelly" appearance and an "Oval Cabochon" cut. The Opal itself (which is essentially colorless) has surrounding host rock matrix, and actually shows a beautiful "Contra Luz" effect with flashes of green, blue and purple when the stone is rotated in the light. The prices being paid for the older material (which this stone is), are going through the roof recently. Please note that this gem was difficult to photograph, but looks better in person than the photos might indicate.
