Item Description

Very large plate of gemmy, grey Fluorite crystals from the famous Weardale area in England, from an old East Coast collection we purchased. The crystals, with excellent luster on most faces, range up to 1.8 cm, and have the excellent interpenetration twinning so closely associated with English Fluorites. Equally classic is their wonderful sensitivity to UV light. Put this piece near any light with a UV component, even a fluorescent desk lamp or out in the sun, and the crystals immediately begin to glow a distinct purple. IN FACT, THIS IS HOW THE VERY TERM FLUORESCENCE GOT ITS NAME! Miners were astounded when they brought fluorite to the surface from under the ground, and saw the phenomenon. It is named for the fluorites from this region of England. This is such an amazing and attractive effect, and where the word 'fluorescent' originates (from English Fluorites, that is). Plates of this size from the old mines of Weardale are far and few between, making this a treasure. Overall this is an outstanding specimen, aesthetic and impressive. Valued $4000-6000, and it is BETTER IN PERSON as well. You simply cannot get such things on the market anymore.
