Item Description

Quartz is actually fairly unusual from the fluorite district of Illinois, and an aesthetic specimen of fluorite ON quartz, sparkling against each other in contrast, is a huge rarity! This large plate features unusually sharp, isolated, purple fluorite crystals perched on an undulating and sparkling quartz matrix. It is a gorgeous piece, of unusual combination of quality and colors. The fluorite crystals reach 2 cm. This was part of the original donation of Richard and Helen Rice to the Museum, and has an exhibition label. Because of the richness of the quartz, it is likely this is from the somewhat older Illinois locality, the Deardorff Mine (closed by the 1960s as specimen collecting really took off later in other local mines). While Illinois fluorite is of course fairly common, this is an exceptional piece and difficult to value because of the unique contrast. Appraised here at $2000-2500.
