Item Description

When people think of minerals of Lavrion (Laurium), most of them probably don't have an image of Fluorite in their minds. This area is best known for its colorful secondary ore minerals, not Fluorite. This piece is an attractive thumbnail specimen featuring several sharp, lustrous, dark purple cubic crystals of Fluorite measuring up to 1.1 cm on edge, sitting on minor oxidized matrix. When backlit, the crystals show good internal gemminess, with slight color zoning as the edges are a darker purple hue as opposed to the centers of the crystals. From the collection of Robert (Bob) Reynolds who passed in August of 2020. Bob was a well-known fossil and mineral expert and former Curator of Earth Sciences at the San Bernardino County Museum in California. The rare phyllomanganate-chromate species Reynoldsite was named in his honor in 2011.
