Item Description

This piece is labeled as coming from the Babb Mine (Eagle-Babb Mine), in Kentucky but according to mindat.org, Greenockite has not been reported from this locality. With that said, Chet's collection catalogue states that this piece was personally collected by John L. Baum in 1936, so I have to go with that information and say that this might be an unprecedented piece for the locality. I've seen pieces of this material from Marion area in Crittenden County, so it's known from Kentucky, but I can't say that I've seen one from the Babb Mine. With that said, this piece is an incredibly rare association specimen featuring a coverage of soft lilac colored cubes of Fluorite measuring up to 1.0 cm on edge, which play host to little yellow micro crystals of the rare cadmium sulfide, Greenockite! You don't see many Greenockite specimens on the market from any locality, but to find them on Fluorite is notably rare, and the odd Kentucky locality gives this piece an appeal and distinction that makes it worthwhile to add to any Fluorite suite or a collection of rare mineral combos.
From the collection of Chester ("Chet") S. Lemanski Jr. of Browns Mills, New Jersey (https://www.mindat.org/user-461.html). Collection #8482CL. Chet was born 1947 in started collecting minerals circa 1957. He worked briefly as a drill runner at the famous Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey and from 1987 to 1990 he helped convert the mine into a public access mining museum. He has held the role of treasurer, vice president and president of the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society (FOMS), and has been a board member and vice president of the Franklin Mineral Museum. The rare copper arsenate, Lemanskiite was named in his honor in 1999.
