Item Description

A rare USA locale! Sharp, lustrous, battleship-gray galena cuboctahedrons densely intergrown on this impressive and rich 360-degree mounded mass of galena from this interestingly named, small scale lead mine. Individual crystals reach 2.0 cm, with most being compound crystals. Scattered patches of siderite and micro pyrites are a nice contrast and typical accessory. Formerly in the Lee Burnett Collection of Morrison, Colorado and collected in 1951, according to his label. The lead mine was discovered in 1876, operated into the 1890s, and restarted in the 1960s (MINDAT). A fine old specimen recovered between operations. The Burnett label says Lead District (Homestake Mine). This is incorrect. We showed the piece to knowledgeable South Dakota geologist, Dr. Tom Campbell, who said the piece is from the Double Rainbow Mine. A bit of bruising has negligible impact to the overall excellent quality of the rare specimen. Rich and hefty lead ore at 805 grams or 1.8 pounds mass.
