Item Description

The world's finest examples of glaucodot, a rare Co-Fe-As sulfide, come from this historic mining area. Glaucodot is rarer than cobaltite from here. The hefty ore matrix is peppered on all sides with sections of splendent metallic-gray orthorhombic crystals. The largest exposed crystal face is 3.0 cm, very large for the species and locale. This crystals appears to be about 3.5 cm long with the damaged area. Other crystals reach 2.5 cm. Copper mining started here in the early 1400s and switched to cobalt later. The main mining period was from 1702 until 1873, with minor mining during World War I (MINDAT). A major piece from an old family collection in Europe. Value?
