Item Description

The famous Prospect Park Quarry is one of the most impressive (and under appreciated) Zeolite localities in the world. This quarry has produced some amazing specimens in the last 100 years. This specimen features attractive, rhombic orange-pink color crystals of Gmelinite with green Prehnite and white Calcite plus dark forest green Pumpellyite on matrix. Typically, Gmelinites are not this colorful, so this is a hard to find shade for the species. The piece is from the Allen V. Heyl Collection, who was a friend of a the Kosnar family and for whom the species Aheylite was named. According to Allen's label, the somewhat silvery-beige colored crystals could be Corrensite(?). Sadly, this great New Jersey locality is being filled in for a housing development (like so many of the great Trap Rock localities in this area), and pieces like this one will be never be collected again.
