Item Description

Labelled as Limonite on the century-old faded label, this is a rich and very showy large old-time sculptural mounded plate of multi-generational Goethite from this famous old and extinct iron ore mine. Goethite was discovered here in 1732! It was the most important mine in the district, produced sporadically (heavily from 1884 to 1904) and was the last mine to close in the district in 1923 (MINDAT). Highly lustrous, moderately lustrous and matte finish bubbly botryoids of variable size dramatically cover the limonite matrix plate. From an East Coast collection and comes with a faded century-old label. Classic and excellent old-time Ore Hill Mine goethite.
