Item Description

Mineral specimens from the long difunct Negaunee Iron Mine of Michigan are very rare, indeed. This fabulous, sculptural, large specimen consists of banded, botryoidal, goethite "kidney" ore. The lustrous botryoids have a very pleasing, variably brown color. The striking, large botryoid at the top is 4.8 cm. Contacts on the front, back and sides reveal the nifty banded nature of the goethite. The bottom front of the piece has an OLD paper label glued on. Ex Lafayette College Collection and certainly dates to the late 19th to early 20th centuries. A major disaster occurred at this underground mine in 1902, when 13 to 17 miners were thought to have been killed in a cave-in, as reported by the New York Times. Classic and rare iron ore from the well-known Marquette Iron Range. 3.5 pounds or 1.6 kilos.
