Item Description

A very good quality crystallized "spray" of Goethite comprising sharp, lustrous, dark brownish-black colored prisms measuring up to 1.0 cm long which are associated with a few really richly colored crystals of Amethyst which are included with Goethite "needles". This particular style of Quartz is refered to as "Onegite" by local diggers. Very attractive in person, and hard to find such attractive thumbnail / toenial sized pieces. This is something that most collectors don't even think about adding to their collections because it's a "black rock", but when you take the superior crystallization into account, you realize that these are some of the best crystallized representations of the species extant! Lastly, the pronunciation of this species is a bit confusing, but we like to point out that it was named after the famous German philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, so it is properly pronounced GER-tite (with a hard "g" like gold). This thumbnail comes from the collection of Willard W. Wulff (1904-1998) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, a prominent figure and collector of Colorado minerals. Wulff was one of the founding members of the Colorado Springs Mineralogical Society in 1936. You can read Willard's bio on the Mineralogical Record website here ( http://www.minrec.org/labels.asp?colid=1528 ). The pieces come with a typed label from Wulff attached to the bottom of the box.
