Gold (fine antique crystal)

Item Description

A beautiful single Gold crystal from Ballarat, Australia with rich buttery metallic color, and well-defined dodecahedral faces. As far as I can tell, the crystal appears to be a complete "floater", as I can't find any damage or point of attachment. I'm told that these were weathered out of the rock, and found loose in the Yarrowee River, but this one is still fairly sharp, so it didn't tumble around much before it was discovered. We've never had one of these particular crystals to offer from this locality, and they must be rare, as I can only find one other on mindat.org for comparison. From the collection of George Elling, a prominent East Coast collector, with an excellent old label from prominent Colorado dealer, Lazard Cahn stating the piece came from the collection of Sir Warington W. Smyth. Cahn died in 1940, so the piece is at LEAST 80+ years old. An additional label from the collection of Harry A. Simon of Rochester, New York confirms the Ballarat locality.
