Item Description

A classic specimen of these now seldom seen Grossular Garnet specimens from near Lake Jaco. There are actually no Garnets found at Lake Jaco, but the locality misnomer has persisted through the decades, so it's something that you'll see designated on a lot of these pieces. The piece features a pair of large, attractive, sharp, lustrous, light pinkish-golden color, dodecahedral crystals of Grossular free of matrix from this famous locality that produced specimen in the mid-late 1990s. The underside is contacted, and you can see the center of the piece has a dark chocolate brown hue. Good specimens are not common on the market anymore, and to find a Garnet specimen (regardless of species) with sharp, lustrous crystals of this size is a big deal. Priced at $1,800 in our inventory. From the collection of Chester ("Chet") S. Lemanski Jr. of Browns Mills, New Jersey (https://www.mindat.org/user-461.html). Collection #20536L. Chet was born 1947 in started collecting minerals circa 1957. He worked briefly as a drill runner at the famous Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, New Jersey and from 1987 to 1990 he helped convert the mine into a public access mining museum. He has held the role of treasurer, vice president and president of the Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society (FOMS), and has been a board member and vice president of the Franklin Mineral Museum. The rare copper arsenate, Lemanskiite was named in his honor in 1999.
