Item Description

A fine, sharp, near complete reddish-brown trapezohedral crystal group of Grossular from the Kayes Region of Mali. There has been some debate / confusion as to where these specimens were found, so we have simply decided to leave it labeled as Kayes. For several years we were told they came from Dionboko, but recent information suggest that this is an erroneous locality, and these crystals are potentially from Koukouri. The piece is in great shape overall, with only a small spot on the bottom / back where it was removed from the pocket wall, but it's well crystallized all the way around. The largest Garnet measures 3.6 cm across, which is very good sized for the locality. A great Garnet specimen from Mali to add to any collection. These specimens have completely dried up in the last several years, and you can't get them anymore. Ex Kay Robertson Collection (#3028). Kay is a prominent California collector, who specialized in European classics (see the article in the March-April, 2007 Mineralogical Record and the 50+ page article in the German Magazine "Mineralien Welt" November-December 2017).
